Just received this email from a good friend. I think it's a brilliant idea to ask for donations instead of gifts, particularly since her birthday is so close to Election Day. I know you're all probably tapped out, but if you were going to throw MoveOn PAC some cash to support their fabulous ads or their GOTV work, maybe you'll do it through
my friend's page and make her birthday a little brighter. I've copied her email below the fold.
Dear Friends,
As some of you know (and the rest of you should know!), my 33rd birthday is less than a month away. Remember that sparkly, excited feeling birthdays brought when you were a kid? And all those presents! That's why I'm writing. I don't want presents this year. I do want the sparkly, excited feeling I'll get when this country elects John Kerry as our next president. So if you were inclined to do something nice for my birthday, perhaps you'd consider making a small donation to MoveOn PAC. I've chosen them, rather than the Democratic Party, because I feel MoveOn more closely represents my politics, and I've been impressed by their efforts to take control of electoral politics and put it where it's supposed to be -- in the hands of ordinary people -- not in those of special interests, corporations, or just a wealthy few.
Right now, MoveOn PAC is focused on getting George Bush out of the White House and John Kerry in. They just launched a major field program that will put 500 paid organizers and thousands of volunteers in 10,000 neighborhoods inside key battleground states. The goal is to turn out 440,000 Kerry votes, enough to tip the balance in November. The MoveOn model is about people coming together and making change, raising large sums in small donations to combat the big-money donations collected by the Bush/Cheney campaign. That's where you come in - the small donation part. Your money will help:
- Support the biggest get-out-the-vote drive in American history, especially in battleground states
- Run ads to reach millions of voters in swing states - ads that will cut through the spin and set the record straight
- Change the way politics works, and shifting power to everyday people
Please consider joining in the effort. The future of our country depends on it. And I'd really like to wake up on November 3rd, my birthday morning, to a brand new, shiny birthday gift - President John Kerry.
